Privacy Policy
Scholar Sync browser extension · Last updated: 8 June 2026
This Privacy Policy explains how Scholar (“we”, “us”, “our”) handles information when you use the Scholar Sync browser extension (the “Extension”). The Extension lets you sync your own coursework from your school’s learning management system (“LMS”) — Blackboard and Canvas — into your Scholar account so Scholar’s study tools can use it.
Information We Collect
The Extension only accesses data for the courses you are enrolled in, and it does so using your own existing, signed-in LMS session. Specifically:
- Your LMS identity. Your name, email address, and LMS user ID, as provided by Blackboard or Canvas, used to link your courses to your Scholar account.
- Your course content. For courses you are enrolled in: course details, announcements, files and documents, assignments, grades and feedback, rubrics, calendar events, and discussions.
- Information stored on your device.A Scholar session token and your sync settings (such as your LMS host and auto-sync preference) are stored locally in your browser so you don’t have to reconnect each time.
We do not collect your passwords or login credentials. The Extension works through the session you are already signed in to and never sees or stores your LMS or Scholar password.
How We Use Information
- To sync the course materials you choose into your Scholar account.
- To power Scholar’s study features — such as summaries, quizzes, flashcards, and chat — using your synced materials.
- To keep your account secure and the service operating correctly.
We do not use your information for advertising, and we do not sell it.
Limited Use
Scholar’s use of information received through the Extension complies with the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including its Limited Use requirements. We use this data only to provide and improve the syncing and study features described above. We do not sell it, we do not use or transfer it for personalized advertising, and we do not allow humans to read it except: (a) with your consent; (b) as needed for security or to comply with applicable law; or (c) where the data has been aggregated or de-identified.
How We Share Information
We do not sell your personal information. We share it only in these cases:
- Service providers. We use trusted providers that process data on our behalf and under contract — such as cloud hosting and storage, AI processing used to generate study features, and product analytics. They may use your data only to provide services to us.
- Legal and safety. We may disclose information if required by law or to protect the rights, property, or safety of our users or others.
Your Education Records
The Extension accesses only your own education records, for courses in which you are enrolled, using your own authenticated session. It does not access other students’ data, and you control which courses you sync.
Data Retention
We keep your synced course data while your Scholar account is active and the Extension is connected, so your study materials stay available. The session token and settings stored on your device remain until you disconnect the Extension or uninstall it.
Your Choices
- Disconnect or uninstall the Extension at any time to stop syncing and remove the data it stores on your device.
- Turn auto-sync off in the Extension’s popup.
- Request access to, correction of, or deletion of your information — or delete your Scholar account — by contacting us at the address below.
- Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights under laws such as the GDPR or CCPA.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy from time to time. The “Last updated” date above shows the most recent change; significant changes will be communicated through the Extension or our website.
